The city was founded in 138 BC by the Romans, then it passed through the hands of the Visigoths and Muslims over the centuries. Conquered by King Jaume I in 1238 it passed to the Catalano-Aragonese crown and during the fifteenth century it took part in Valencia's Golden Age. In the eighteenth century the War of Spanish Succession significantly affected the Kingdom of Valencia and it was taken over by Philip V.
