An old pirate nest, Mallorca was a Roman colony, Almoravide principality, and independent kingdom until it joined the Crown of Aragon in 1349.

In the mid-nineteenth century, the first regular sea route from the mainland peninsula began and with it the advent of tourism, especially amongst intellectuals and artists who were attracted by the novel "A Winter in Mallorca", in which the writer George Sand narrates his stay on the island with the composer Frederic Chopin.

Its climate, typically Mediterranean, enjoys high temperature in summer and rarely falls below 5ºC in the winter, with high humidity levels for an island. Snow falls regularly on the highest Serra Tramuntana peaks but is infrequent in the plains and the capital.

The main economic engine is tourism and its hotel services are among the best in the world. Tourist destinations such as Magalluf, El Arenal Beach, Alcudia, or the Portals Vells Bay are favorite destinations of tourists the whole world over.

Magaluf Bay

Mallorca is rich in festivals and Mediterranean tradition. The eve of Sant Antoni Abad is celebrated throughout the island on January 16 amongst "dimonis" with bonfires and "gloses" chants.
The islands' capital pays homage to its patron saint San Sebastian on January 20, filling the city with concerts and activities in which the "Gegants de la ciutat" and the "aiguafoc", one of the largest firework shows in Europe, is in abundance.
The sea, the magic, and the fire all come together in the Parc de la Mar de Palma every June 23 to celebrate San Juan's Night and the arrival of summer. In the "Nit del Foc", The dance of the "demonis" and the correfoc precede the bonfire leap and the midnight purifying bath on the beach.
