Alicante is the capital of the province of the same name, a predominantly tourist
city that faces the sea. A coastal route takes us from the Marina
to the
Panoramis Shopping Centre, taking in Canalejas Park
and the Explanada de España, an emblematic promenade lined with
craft stalls, live music and illustrious buildings such as the Carbonell Building.
The city’s 15 km coastline is dotted with beaches. Near the airport to the south,
is Saladar Beach, in the city area itself is 3}Postiguet Beach,
and further to the north, San Juan Beach.
The City Hall or Municipal Palace leads to the historic centre
or "Neighbourhood" of Alicante, with its two different personalities.
During the day you can take a walk around the Plaza de la Santisima Faz,
the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, visit the Gravina Museum of Fine Arts MUBAG)
or stroll through the Santa Cruz neighbourhood. At night the place
is thronged with people seeking out the city’s nightlife, with dozens of bars open
until the early hours of the morning.
Strategically situated on top of Mount Benacantil, Santa Barbara Castle
has been converted into an entertainment venue for holding exhibitions and events.
Below the castle lies La Ereta Park, with its harmonious mix of
walled pathways and rock and further down, the Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ)
is a must-see on any cultural itinerary.
